Solar System in Emu Plains

Solar System Not Working? Start Here.

Most solar faults fall into three groups. Roughly half are the Wi-Fi, not the system, your panels are generating fine, the app just can’t see them. A good share are grid voltage, where the inverter shuts itself down to protect your house and isn’t faulty at all. The rest are genuine hardware, and those need a technician.

The table below tells you which one you’ve got in about a minute. If it’s the first two, our brand guides will get you sorted without anyone coming out. If it’s the third, we will.

We service every system we’ve installed since 2014, and we take on other installers’ work too, including the orphaned systems left behind by companies that have since disappeared.

What Your System Is Telling You

Find your symptom. Half the time you’ll fix it yourself in five minutes.

What you’re seeingWhat it usually meansWhat to do
App or portal shows no dataAlmost always the Wi-Fi, not the inverter. New router, changed password, or the NBN was swapped over. Your system is usually generating perfectly.Fix it yourself. Use the brand guide below to reconnect. Nobody needs to come out.
Shutting down and restarting through the dayUsually grid over-voltage. When network voltage climbs above the allowable limit, your inverter switches off to protect itself and your appliances. Common on the long feeders through the Mountains and the semi-rural fringe.Read the brand guide first. If it keeps happening, the fix is often with Endeavour Energy rather than your inverter, and we’ll log it for you.
Screen blank, no lights at allThe inverter has lost its AC supply, or a breaker has tripped at the switchboard.Check your switchboard for a tripped solar breaker and the isolators beside the inverter. Still dead with everything on? Book a service call.
Red or orange fault lightAnything from a passing grid event to a real hardware fault. The code tells us which.Photograph the screen or the app error, then power down and back up in the correct order using the brand guide. Send us the photo either way — it saves diagnostic time.
Generating less than it used toA gradual decline is usually soiling or trees that have grown. A sudden step down is a failed panel, a dead string, or an optimiser gone offline.Compare this month against the same month last year in your app. Step change means fault. Gradual means dirt or shade.
Safety switch or RCD trippingMoisture ingress or insulation breakdown, often showing up after heavy rain.Leave the system off and book a service call. This isn’t a wait-and-see one.
Clicking, buzzing or hummingA loose DC connection or a failing relay. Loose DC connections are the most common cause of rooftop solar fires.Switch it off at the isolators and call us. Don’t leave it running.
Battery not charging or holding chargeMost often a communications fault between battery and inverter, or firmware that’s fallen behind. Genuine cell failure is rarer than people assume.Check the app for an error code first, then see our battery service page.

What We Repair, Service & Upgrade

Inverter Repairs

The part most likely to fail first, and the fault we attend most. Diagnosis, repair, warranty claims and like-for-like or upgraded replacement across every major brand.

Inverter repairs →

Battery Service

We’ve installed more than 500 batteries and we service all of them, plus other installers’ work. Comms faults, firmware, state-of-health testing and backup changeover checks.

Battery service →

System Maintenance

A scheduled health check every few years catches loose DC connections, corroded isolators and failed panels before they become an outage or a safety issue.

System & Battery Upgrades

Sometimes the answer isn’t a repair. Adding panels, replacing an ageing inverter with a hybrid, or retrofitting a battery to a system that’s still got years in it.

Fix It Yourself First

We’d rather you didn’t book a technician for something you can sort out in five minutes. These are the two faults we get called about most, written up brand by brand, with the exact button sequence.

What a Service Call Involves

No mystery, no upselling, and nothing done to your system without you knowing why.

StageWhat happens
1. Phone triageBefore anything is booked, one of our own electricians talks through the symptoms with you. A fair number of calls end here with the system working again and no visit needed.
2. BookingWe confirm a window and tell you what we’ll need access to — the switchboard, the inverter, and roof access if it comes to that. You’ll know who’s coming.
3. On-site diagnosisFull fault diagnosis, AC and DC isolator condition, switchboard inspection, connection and torque checks where relevant, and an inspection of the array and mounting itself.
4. The explanationWe show you what we found on the spot and lay out your options in plain terms. If it’s a manufacturer warranty matter, we identify who carries it and lodge the claim for you.
5. The write-upA written report of the fault, what was done and anything worth keeping an eye on. Yours to keep, and genuinely useful if you ever sell the house.

Repair It, or Upgrade It?

On an older system, a fault is often the moment to ask a bigger question. A dead inverter on a ten-year-old array isn’t always a repair job — sometimes it’s the right time to move to a hybrid inverter so a battery becomes an option later, or to add panels while the roof is already being worked on.

We’ll always tell you which we think it is, and we’ll tell you when the answer is simply to fix what’s there and leave the rest alone.

Orphaned by Your Installer?

A large share of our service work is systems installed by companies that have since gone under. It’s the most common call we get, and there’s no awkwardness in it — we’ll pick up the file.

Your warranty probably still stands. Manufacturer warranties on panels, inverters and batteries sit with the manufacturer, not the installer. If the company that fitted your system has folded, the product warranty usually survives. What you lose is the workmanship warranty and the person to lodge the claim. We’ll lodge it for you.

Bring what you have. Your original invoice, the STC paperwork, panel and inverter model numbers, or just a photo of the inverter label. If you have none of it, that’s fine — we can work most of it out from the equipment on site.

We’ll tell you if it isn’t worth fixing. On a twelve-year-old system with a dead budget inverter, the honest answer is sometimes replacement rather than repair. We’d rather say so than patch something that won’t last the year.

Service Questions We Get Asked

My solar app shows nothing. Is my system broken?

Usually not. Around half the “system down” calls we take turn out to be the Wi-Fi connection rather than the system, most often after a new router or an NBN changeover. Your panels keep generating and your bills stay low; you just can’t see it. Try the brand guide above before booking anything.

My solar app shows nothing. Is my system broken?

Most often grid over-voltage. When the voltage on the network rises above the permitted range, your inverter shuts down to protect itself and your appliances, then restarts once it settles. Nothing is faulty. It’s common on long feeders through the Mountains and the semi-rural fringe, and the fix often sits with Endeavour Energy rather than with your equipment. We’ll log it with them for you.

How often should solar panels be serviced?

A health check every two to three years suits most systems, and annually if you’re near bushland, on a dusty rural block, or under heavy tree cover. The point isn’t cleaning — it’s catching loose DC connections, corroded isolators and degrading panels before they become an outage or a fire risk.

Is my warranty void if my original installer went out of business?

Generally no. Manufacturer warranties on panels, inverters and batteries sit with the manufacturer, so they survive the installer closing. What you lose is the workmanship warranty and someone to lodge the claim. We handle claims for systems we didn’t install.

Should I repair a failed inverter or replace it?

It depends on age, brand and parts availability. Inverters still under warranty are usually replaced through the manufacturer. Out of warranty, a repair can make sense on a good unit, while a twelve-year-old budget inverter is usually better replaced — and that’s often the moment to move to a hybrid so a battery becomes an option later. We’ll lay out both paths and let you choose. See system and battery upgrades.

Can I add panels to my existing system instead of replacing it?

Often, yes — it depends on your inverter’s spare capacity, how the existing strings are configured, and whether the original panels can still be matched. Micro inverter and optimiser systems expand most easily. Our guide on adding panels to an existing system walks through what’s involved.

Get It Looked At
