Live in Penrith, Emu Plains, or nearby? The Federal Battery Rebate is now live and can make solar battery storage far more affordable, with the incentive calculated per usable kilowatt hour and applied as an upfront discount. The rebate will decrease from 1 May 2026, so installing before that date allows you to secure the higher rate.

If you already have solar panels or are planning to install them, a battery lets you store and use your own energy at night, cutting your power bills and reducing your reliance on the grid.

This rebate makes it the perfect time to add a battery system with your trusted local experts at E-Smart Solar.

What Is the Federal Battery Rebate?

Launched in July 2025, the Federal Battery Rebate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is now live, helping lower the cost of home battery systems for households in Penrith, Emu Plains and Greater Western Sydney.

The incentive is no longer a fixed rate of up to $372 per usable kilowatt hour. It is calculated per usable kWh and applied as an upfront discount. From 1 May 2026, the rate will decrease from roughly $311 per usable kWh to around $252 per usable kWh and will then step down further under a bi annual reduction model with tiered, lower payments for larger systems.

If you are looking to store excess solar energy for night time use or install a complete solar and battery system, installing before May 2026 allows you to secure the higher incentive and reduce your upfront costs by thousands while lowering energy bills and reducing grid reliance.

This means:

  • More value from your solar system
  • Less dependence on electricity retailers
  • Better protection from rising power prices

With the Federal Battery Rebate, powering your home on your terms just got a whole lot easier.

Use our quick rebate calculator to estimate how much you could be eligible for based on your battery size.

Am I Eligible for the Federal Battery Rebate in Penrith?

If you live in Penrith, Emu Plains or surrounding suburbs, there is a strong chance you qualify for the Federal Battery Rebate, particularly if you already have a grid connected solar system or are planning to install one.

Here is what you need to qualify:

  • You own or live in the property
  • Your solar system is grid-connected and meets Australian standards
  • The battery must be installed by an approved installer (like E-Smart Solar)
  • The system should be VPP-ready — but you don’t have to join a Virtual Power Plant

This means if you’re in Western Sydney with a compliant solar setup, or planning a new installation, you could save thousands once the rebate launches.

Can Off-Grid Homes Get the Federal Battery Rebate?

Yes — off-grid solar and battery systems may be eligible for the new Federal Battery Rebate, as long as they meet the required technical and safety standards.

That’s welcome news for rural and semi-rural properties across the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney region, including areas just outside Penrith where reliable grid access can be limited.

For example, at the current Federal Battery Rebate rate of roughly $311 per usable kWh, a 40 kWh system installed before 1 May 2026 could receive around $12,440 in upfront support. From 1 May 2026, the rate will decrease to approximately $252 per usable kWh and will then step down further under the bi annual reduction model.

This rebate could be a game-changer for:

  • Rural households and farms
  • Large homes or off-grid builds
  • Properties relying on diesel or expensive backup power

At E-Smart Solar, we specialise in custom off-grid solutions — and we’re closely monitoring the rollout to ensure your system qualifies.

Can I Combine the Federal Battery Rebate with NSW Incentives?

The NSW battery rebate ended on 30 June 2025, just before the Federal Battery Rebate launched on 1 July 2025. This confirms the two incentives cannot be combined. Households must choose the program that delivers the best value for their specific system.

The NSW Virtual Power Plant incentive remains available for eligible systems and has increased, however the upfront NSW battery discount of up to $2,400 has now been phased out.

At E Smart Solar, we help you assess your eligibility, compare available incentives and determine the best option for your home and energy goals.

Watch Out for Battery Rebate Scams — Stick with Local, Reputable Installers

With the Federal Battery Rebate now live, some untrustworthy operators are already trying to capitalise on the demand, especially in areas like Penrith and Western Sydney.

If you have been approached with an offer that feels rushed, overly aggressive or unclear, it is worth slowing down and checking the details carefully before signing anything.

Common signs of rebate-related scams include:

  • High-pressure sales tactics or “sign now” urgency
  • Lack of Clean Energy Council (CEC) accreditation
  • Confusing or hidden pricing structures
  • Interstate businesses with no local service presence

To stay safe, always choose an established, local installer with real community roots and a proven track record  – like us here at E-Smart Solar.

Local solar professionals are more likely to offer transparent pricing, accredited installations, and long-term support — not just a quick sale.

Federal Battery Rebate – FAQs

When does the Federal Battery Rebate start in NSW?

The Federal Battery Rebate has launched in July 2025, with eligible households in NSW — including Penrith and Emu Plains — able to apply once applications open.

How much can I save with the Federal Battery Rebate?

At the current level, the Federal Battery Rebate is roughly $311 per usable kWh and is applied as an upfront discount at the point of sale. From 1 May 2026, this will decrease to around $252 per usable kWh and then step down further under a bi annual reduction model.

Depending on your battery’s certified usable capacity and installation timing, the rebate can still reduce upfront costs by thousands of dollars. While it may represent around 25 to 30 percent of the battery cost in some cases, the exact saving varies based on system size and when it is installed.

Can I get the rebate if I already have solar?

Yes. If your solar system is grid-connected and meets Australian standards, you may be able to add a battery and access the rebate — as long as it’s installed by an approved provider.

Does the rebate cover off-grid battery systems?

In many cases, yes. Off-grid systems may qualify if they meet specific safety and technical requirements. This is ideal for rural or semi-rural properties outside the main power grid.

Can I combine the Federal Battery Rebate with NSW incentives?

Most likely. Programs like the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) may be stackable with the Federal Battery Rebate — especially if your battery is VPP-ready.
