NSW Battery Rebate Update – Effective July 1, 2025

  • NSW Upfront Rebate Ended
The previous NSW rebate of $1,600–$2,400 ended on June 30, 2025.

  • Federal rebate now tiered
The “Cheaper Home Batteries Program” gives around 30% off eligible batteries. Since 1 May 2026 the full rate applies to the first 14 kWh of usable storage, with a lower rate above that.

  • NSW Boosts VPP Incentives
Households and small businesses can now get up to $1,500 for connecting their battery to a VPP — plus ongoing payments for feeding energy back to the grid.

Federal Battery Rebate Information

Is there still a NSW battery rebate in 2026?

No. The NSW Government’s upfront battery discount of $1,600 to $2,400 closed on 30 June 2025. It was replaced the next day by the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which is bigger and available to every NSW home with solar.

If you see another company still advertising a “NSW battery rebate”, check the date on the page. The offer they’re describing no longer exists.

There are three things you can still access, and they can be used together.

  • 1. Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Around 30% off the cost of an eligible home battery, applied as a discount on your quote so there’s no paperwork for you. Since 1 May 2026 the rate is tiered: the first 14 kWh of usable storage gets the full rate of roughly $244 to $272 per kWh, and capacity above 14 kWh gets a lower rate. The rate steps down every six months until the program ends in 2030, so installing sooner gets you more. Batteries must be 5 to 50 kWh, on the approved product list, VPP-capable and installed with new or existing solar. One rebate per address. Full details on our Federal Battery Rebate page.

    2. NSW Virtual Power Plant (VPP) incentive
An upfront payment of up for connecting your battery to a VPP, a network of home batteries that supports the grid at peak times. You keep control of your battery and can earn ongoing payments for energy you share. This stacks on top of the federal rebate and is also available if you already own a battery.

    3. NSW Home Energy Saver loan
Launched in mid 2026, this low-cost loan through Brighte and Plenti helps spread the cost of a solar and battery system. It stacks with the federal rebate.

Eligibility for the NSW Solar Battery Rebate

If you’re eligible, you could access incentives:

If you’re considering upgrading your energy setup, the NSW Solar Battery Incentive can make it more affordable to include battery storage in your system. Here’s how to qualify:

  • Own or Install Solar Panels: Your property must already have a solar system installed, or you can install one alongside the new battery system.
  • Battery Capacity Requirements: The battery you install must have a usable capacity ranging from 2 kWh to 28 kWh.
  • Certified Installations Only: Ensure your system is installed by an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP) participating in the PDRS scheme.

Already have a battery?

You may not be eligible for the upfront discount on a new battery, but you could still take advantage of the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) connection incentive, helping you optimise the performance of your current system.

Battery incentive FAQs

Yes, on 30 June 2025. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program started on 1 July 2025 and replaced it.

You can’t combine the ended NSW upfront rebate with the federal one. You can combine the federal rebate with the NSW VPP incentive and the NSW Home Energy Saver loan.

Around 30% off an eligible battery. The full rate covers the first 14 kWh of usable storage, so a typical 10 to 14 kWh home battery gets the full rate on every kilowatt hour. Larger batteries get a lower rate above 14 kWh.

Yes. The battery must be installed with a new or existing solar system.

Not the federal rebate, which is for new battery installs only. You can still claim the NSW VPP incentive if your battery is eligible and signs on to a VPP.

Off-grid systems can qualify if the battery meets the program’s technical standards. Talk to us and we’ll check your setup.

Yes. The federal rate drops every six months until the program ends in 2030. Installing earlier locks in a higher rate.
